How to use these blogs
How to use these blogs So I was looking through some old notes that I was working on for this blog- topics to cover, questions to answer, stuff like that, and I came across a collection of things that I had written which can most accurately be titled, How to get the most out of reading the MITblogs, or maybe How to not get a sarcastic reply to a question from me. I fixed them up a bit, and here they are: 1. Just read it. Every once inawhile I get questions like, So, whats MIT like? Yeah, Im not answering that. Read the blogs, thats what theyre for. We try to make them interesting, and I personally try to link each entry to as many other entries as possible, so that you can waste hours clicking arond to random interesting topics. In fact, I think Ill link random words in this entry to some random blog entries. You know, just for fun. 2. Tell us what you want to hear. So, you know those 2 ridiculously long entries I did a little while ago about all of the machine shops on campus? That was done by request- a prospective student asked one of the admissions counselors, who passed it on to us. That was awesome. I spent a week wandering around campus machine shops, awkwardly taking pictures of random people I didnt know. (I find this kind of situation hilarious, personally.) Ive been blogging for over 2 years now. Every once in awhile, I run out of ideas. So give me some of yours. =) 3. Ask good questions. If you ask me âdoes MIT have a major in economics?â Iâm going to be like âdude, why didnât you just go to the MIT home page, click on academics, and then read through the list until you got to the part about the economics major?â Similarly, if you ask me âIs there a group for students who are religiously identified as Lutheran?â Iâm going to just google the MIT site, and while I donât mind doing that for you, itâs not a really exciting question. If you ask something cool and insightful,it may even inspire an entire post, and that would rock. Everyone would be happy. I donât have any examples of this, because if I did, Iâd be off writing said inspired posts instead of this one. My point is, we love getting good questions and entry ideas- a lot of times we donât know what to write, and even when we do, we donât know if youâll really care. 4. Remember that I am a lowly student. Please donât ask me if I filed your letter of recommendation yet. The answer is always no. (You can direct that stuff to admissions at mit dot edu.) 5. Cut it out with the âwhat are my chances?â stuff. I have a very serious question to ask those of you itching to ask this question: who the hell cares?! For real. If there was a crystal ball you could look into that would tell you who was going to be admitted to what schools, you wouldnât need to fill out all those applications, would you? Just fill out the application, send it in, and then wait for the answer. I know the waiting sucks, but is getting some random personâs opinion of your chances really going to help the waiting suck less? No, probably not. If you ask this, were just going to say we dont know anyway. 6. Do not insult my SAT score. I got a 700 on the SAT I math section, and every time I get asked zomg I only got a 760 on the SAT I math and I dont have time to retake it and Im doomed to work at mcdonalds for the rest of my life what should I do???!?!?!?!!! I get angry. And thats not just a personal thing. Im just as angry when the grade in question is as low or lower than mine. Listen to me very carefully: THERE IS MORE TO LIFE THAN THE SAT. And thank God. 7. Every once in awhile, get off the internet and go outside or something. Im serious. Get a tan. Read a book. Stop thinking about college applications so much. What are your thoughts on my ramblings?

Southern Pulp Paper - 1354 Words
Southern Pulp and Paper Introduction In this work I am going to identify the Southern Pulp and Paperââ¬â¢s Toccoa mill problems and issues that are available to millââ¬â¢s manager Curtis Shelton. Part 1 In considering the overall process on the pulp and bleached products industry it is always good to start with the main performance objectives and measures. One of the first important issues is the process design and layout. How the process architecture looks like and how well it is designed to fulfill all the required operations would be the most important questions to be asked. As stated in the case study the main problem of the mill appears to be the machines, number 5 and 6. They were in use since 1967 and were quite old, andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Part 2 In this part I am going to show some improvement techniques, which will help to solve the problems faced by millââ¬â¢s manager. Firstly, in order to understand the entire process and find its problems it is essential to map the process. Using the Flowcharting technique of process mapping and exhibit #3 of the case study a basic scheme of the overall process should be built. Once the process is sketched it is easi er to understand what are the bottlenecks and in which way it could be improved or even redesigned to fulfill the requirements of the system (Slack et al, 1998:701). After having a good understanding of what processes are running in the mill it is then advised to focus on each of them separately. Flow charts can be used for the entire overview of the process improvement. They visually represent the process, identifying the problems and pointing on the participants (material or information flow). The flowchart system can be very basic as well as different approaches could be used such as Burltonââ¬â¢s Transformation Model or Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN). BPMN was developed in two versions, a core notation set to use by business people and an extended notation set for automation. It uses a particular symbol set (Harmon, 2007:231). How Bangladesh is affected by flooding Free Essays
Flooding is a huge problem for the people in Bangladesh and the problems continue to have negative and positive effects on the people, property and land/environment. The negatives of flooding; There are many different types of floods that Bangladesh suffers from and these are; flash floods; where there is an extreme amount of rainfall effecting both upland areas and over time low land areas. This type of flood has a huge affect on property as it can wash it away completely destroying it and also flooding crops and killing them, this type of flooding will also deposit lots of sediment so the river bed will rise making the river easier to flood. We will write a custom essay sample on How Bangladesh is affected by flooding or any similar topic only for you Order Now River floods are where high amounts of rain and melted snow from the Himalayas completely flood the river and also the floodplain, the water can not be contained so flows over lands which is usually not protected, this again damages crops by flooding them and also ruining the land for future use as farm land. This type of flooding will also damage or even destroy property and in extreme cases entire settlements which in turn will also kill people if they do not evacuate quick enough. Rainwater floods are where there are again extreme amounts of rainfall and there is too much surface water and land is flooded. This can kill cattle, people and destroy farmland and crops which people need for their livelihoods. For example of crop destruction, in 1987 and 1988 rice production on a country scale was largely disrupted due to extreme floods. Even if engineering is successful and floods are controlled there is the negative effects that the country gets further into debt and a lot of the flood controls do not fit in with the natural environment so is an eye sore. Methods of flood control also effect farming in certain areas as they block irrigation of water so many farmers are complaining as they are not getting the water needed to grow crops for their livelihood. The worst effected areas of flooding are the coast as many people live here and this is where flooding is most extensive, many people are killed damage to property and farm land is huge so this disrupts the local economy. In the floods of 1991 flooding was that hard that waves were 7 metres high and this brought wind speeds of 225 km/h. people had to climb trees to evade the floods but over 150 000 people were drowned and 500 000 cattle were lost along with vast damage to settlements, electricity, roads and fishing. Deforestation is another big factor that is negative as this destroys trees that are vital for the world and also does not allow interception to occur so the snow melting from the Himalayas is coming directly to Bangladesh with nothing sopping it. As there is little knowledge and little communication available people can not prepare and are defenceless. With the vast amounts of chemicals and diseases in the Ganges, flooding just spreads this all around the country contaminating drinking water and brings huge problems that need huge amount of medical care so calls for the worlds charities to help. You can read also Waves There are very little positive effects of flooding as floods bring so much destruction. The positives though are; due to vast amounts of deposition the silt that is deposited is high in fertility so ââ¬Ërepairsââ¬â¢ the soil so can be used in the future making it good for crops to grow in. also the vast amounts of water, when controlled can be irrigated for the crops rice and jute which require a large amount of water to grow. This in turn helps re ââ¬â boost the local economy and gets the farmers back to their usual livelihood. Finally in cases of extreme flooding where the world is made aware, it can show the kindness of countries by the help they donate and the medical care made available to help restore the country to normal. Although there will always be social, economic, and humane problems with flooding the key is for the country to recover as quick as possible with the least effects and damage done to the country and its people. She meant that if a body is left alone for even a few minutes on the desert, the coyotes close in and eats the flesh. Whether or not a corpse is torn apart by coyotes may seem only a sentimental consideration, but of course it is more: one of the promises we make to one another is that we will try to retrieve our casualties, try not to abandon our dead to the coyotes. If we have been taught to keep our promises ââ¬â if, in the simplest terms, our upbringing is good enough ââ¬â we stay with the body, or have bad dreams. Morals are expendable when survival lies in the balance. Survival, of what? Survival of life, survival of an idea, survival of a relationship? Millions have killed millions because they thought their agenda was more prevalent, or their god justified it, or because they needed to in order to fulfill the instinctual desire to live at all costs. In no way am I saying that ethics should be readily broken for personal gain, but the principles that so many try to live by arent as universally important as they seem. I truly believe that if you are not living for other people, you are not truely living. Relationships mean everything. Its not just the way you treat family, or your friends, its everyone. I treat people how I would want to be treated and give respect where respect is due. My morals are much more diverse then just dont lie, steal, cheat, or kill . My morals are reflective of todays day and age, not as dated and black n white as those four. My morals are competitive, like our present society. I never intend to hurt anyone, and my actions are far from malicious, but if the survival of something I hold close lies in the balance, I am willing to bend my moral code in order to ensure the continued existence of what I view jeopardized. I stand by what I believe; those are my morals. Live for others, but never forget who is left at the end of the day. Ive always viewed integrity as personal. Its how you a carry yourself. Its how you act when no one is watching. But, this is all personal. I dont let other people dictate my integrity, I let my actions speak, and I ask myself at the end of the day, if I acted like the man I want to be. Many days, when I reflect on myself, I realize I havent been. And this is life, improving day to day so you never repeat mistakes.
